Travel by Executive Coach and Ferry or Eurotunnel to Northern France. En route, there will be a break at Vimy Ridge to view the towering stone monument built to commemorate the struggles of the Canadian soldiers who fought for this vital piece of high ground. As well as the Visitor Centre devoted to the battle, the Memorial Park also features some well preserved trench-lines which can be walked along with craters and shell holes still clearly visible nearly a Century after the hostilities ended.
Following breakfast you will spend the morning at the Musee Somme 1916 in Albert, one of the foremost educational exhibitions devoted to the Great War. After lunch, your group is joined on your coach by an expert Tour Guide to take you on the Circuit of Remembrance. The tour will also taking in the Ulster Tower, the impressive Thiepval Monument and Visitor Centre, the Lochnagar Crater and several other important sites remembering the role of the Commonwealth Nations during the hostilities. These include the Newfoundland Memorial at Beaumont Hamel, where the pupils will be able to weave their way through the networks of beautifully preserved trenches. After this full day exploring the battlefield sites of the Somme, your group will return to your residential centre in time for dinner and the chance to discuss the impact of the day’s activities.
You will board your coach after breakfast on the last morning for the journey home. Your first stop en-route will be the attractive town of Arras where you will visit the Wellington Quarry where pupils will learn the story of subterranean life for the thousands of British soldiers who lived in former underground quarries which were adapted for strategic purposes in 1916. After a pause to eat the pack lunch provided, there may be the opportunity for a brief shopping trip in a typical French Hypermarket before making the return crossing and a late night arrival back at your school gates.
